National Wanna Play Music Week 2010!
To put music making in the public spotlight, NAMM is developing lots of high-profile media opportunities and interactive music making experiences sure to inspire millions.
National Wanna Play Music Week, May 3-7, is our industry’s opportunity to toot our own horn…and showcase the joys of making any kind of music just for the fun of it. To accomplish this, NAMM has joined with top public relations firm Golin Harris to create daily themes designed to draw media attention, get people talking and hopefully prompt them to purchase a musical instrument for themselves or someone they love.
The weeklong initiative kicks off with Music Monday, a galvanizing event demonstrating the importance of music education, in which music programs across North America perform the same song at the same time. Last year, more than 700,000 students across North America participated in this simultaneous concert.
Tech Music Tuesday celebrates music innovations and will feature “flash jams,” impromptu jam sessions in key locations around the U.S. and Canada. Sure to capture the attention of the public and media alike!
Wednesday’s focus is music advocacy and kicks off with the announcement of the Best Communities for Music Education, honoring schools and communities that work hard to make music a part of a complete education for every child.
On Thursday, NAMM will reveal “Unexpected Celebrity Musicians,” a variety of celebrities, from athletes to actors, that most people would be surprised to learn are accomplished players. A new “wiki” database will be released online that includes the names and instruments played by these famous musical hobbyists and visitors will be invited to add to the list.
On Friday, we bring Wanna Play Music Week to a close by honoring the hub of all things musical—the local community music store—and encouraging non-musicians to pay these stores a visit to get started.
This should be an exciting week of media coverage, special events, promotions and reminders of why playing music is a great thing to do regardless of age or skill level. NAMM is also inviting many of its trusted partners and friends to help spread the word about Wanna Play Music Week to their audiences and use this opportunity to further their own goals this year.
