Summit VI: Strategies for 2017
Global Summit VI, held recently in Carlsbad, Calif., gave Summit delegates an idea of what the future holds for the music products industry.
Global Summit VI was held recently in Carlsbad, Calif., generating inspiration and optimism about the future of the music products industry despite the many business concerns of today.
NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond kicked off the meeting by illustrating the association’s “cradle to grave” assortment of partnerships and programs to attract more non-music makers of all ages into Members’ stores.
Over the three days, Summit delegates got an amazing view into the world of tomorrow from physicist and television host, Dr. Michio Kaku, heard from Gabor Burt, a world-renowned expert on “Blue Ocean Strategy” which deals with going after uncontested market space and watched as Paul McManus from the Musical Industries Association of the UK led a rousing panel discussion. “We have to be able to help the recreational participant feel more welcome in our stores if we want them to shop there instead of the mass merchants,” said Brock Kariecher, president, REMO.
The Summit also explored new topics like the impact of the video game industry, specifically virtual music making games like Guitar Hero and new approaches in music education with Chris Larkin from Red Octane and David Price, Educational Arts Limited. Ian Harvey, Australian Music Association, then led another panel discussion on these topics.
Day two touched on the topic of innovation with a keynote presentation by Robert Tucker, followed by a panel discussion called the Innovation Talk Show. Next, Sougmen Bagchi told the group about the many opportunities opening up in India. The delegates also attended breakout workshops coming up with new ideas and applying what they had learned so far to their businesses.
Wrapping up the meeting, the group heard from Mark Thompson, author of the best-selling book, Success Built to Last. After three days of presentations, panels, breakout groups and industry discussion, the delegates left Summit VI with new inspiration, ideas and friendships that will lead to future industry success and growth. “I have four notebooks filled with ideas that I will use all year long as a result of this Summit,” said Brian Chung, Kawai.
