Johnny Smith

Robert Benedetto is a guitar luthier’s luthier! Respected around the world, Bob has achieved what few have in guitar craftsmanship: a unique style and sound, creative and classic design, and tooling that is second to none. His knowledge of guitar building was evident in our interview with Bob along with his genuine respect for his contemporaries. With his lovely wife, Cindy, at his side, Bob was interviewed for the NAMM Oral History program on January 18, 2004. 

Denisa Hanna took guitar lessons with jazz great Johnny Smith before working with him at his musical instrument store in Colorado Springs, CO. While working in the store she met and fell in love with jazz drummer, Jake Hanna. When the couple moved to Los Angeles, Denisa expanded her interest as a luthier and devoted herself to the fine craft of bow making. During her interview she provided a history of bow making as well as several demonstrations of the many processes involved with hand made bows.

Johnny Smith was in person what he has been on recordings, warm, engaging and inspirational. Over the years Johnny has been linked to many innovative musical products, most notably the guitar that bares this name. Out in Colorado Springs, he even ran his own musical store for over 25 years. His music store contained a renowned repair shop and Johnny himself providing lessons.
