Wanna Play Campaign

NAMM launched the Wanna Play campaign to raise awareness and inspire people of all ages and talent levels to get involved in music making–anything from taking lessons to purchasing their first instrument or music software. Around the world, people know the entertainment and economic value of music making, but they may not realize the many social and health benefits of playing an instrument. Gavin DeGrawThe Wanna Play? campaign was developed to change that, educating people about the advantages of making music, and inspiring them to become active participants.

“Music has been my airline ticket to a new world of possibilities. To play music, I don’t need any money in my pocket, or a good pair of sneakers, or anyone else around. I never even planned on having an audience, it just worked out that way. As long as I’m hearing and playing great music, I really don’t need anything else at all." - Gavin DeGraw

For decades, NAMM has funded scientific research to explore the relationship between music making and wellness, and music making and the brain. These studies show conclusively that music making provides a variety of positive benefits, ranging from increased intelligence to healthier lifestyles. The Wanna Play? campaign is informing the public about results from research, findings from opinion polling, innovations in the music industry and support from artists.

As a young singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist, Gavin DeGraw is working with NAMM to serve as the ambassador of the Wanna Play? campaign. Gavin brings his passion for music and charismatic personality to the Wanna Play? campaign and its mission. While he makes playing an instrument look easy, Gavin also stresses the benefits of making music at any level. To watch a video interview with Gavin, click here.
