NAMM Music Education Advocacy D.C. Fly-In

May 20- 23, 2019

Each May, a group of NAMM members and special guests gather in Washington, D.C. to serve as advocates for the right of every child to learn and grow with music by visiting with their elected representatives on Capitol Hill. 

NAMM Fly-In participants, or delegates, receive intensive training from their peers and from policy experts to prepare for meetings with their members of congress. Information outlining research-based talking points and a targeted policy and/or funding request are provided. Congressional visits are also an opportunity to celebrate with members of congress the school districts and individual schools in their states and congressional districts that received national recognition through The NAMM Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education designation or SupportMusic Merit Award.

It is a rewarding honor to be a part of the diverse group of NAMM members who come together with a common purpose, to ensure that our education system continues to provide the opportunity to learn music. In Washington, we are personally educating our country’s leaders on the power of music and helping to protect student’s rights to have music as part of their curriculum, today and into the future.

  • Who Should Attend? 

    Current NAMM members who are owners and senior managers of music businesses should consider participating in the Fly-In; registration is available on a first-come first served basis as space is limited.  Delegates may be placed on a wait list as the need to target Congressional meetings are reviewed. NAMM members are welcome to bring one guest for an additional fee (see FAQ below, "How Much Does It Cost to Attend the Fly-In?"). Training and Hill Visits are open to delegates only. NAMM guests are welcome to attend breakfasts and dinners along with certain special events.  

    Representatives from NAMM partner organizations may register to attend the Fly-In by invitation. If you are not a NAMM member with an active membership, but would like to attend the Fly-In, please contact Eric Ebel.   

    High school or college-age students are unable to attend the Fly-In as a delegate, at this time.

  • How Much Does It Cost to Attend the Fly-In? 

    Delegate (Includes three or four nights in hotel): $500 
    Delegate (Sharing a hotel room w/another delegate, three or four nights in hotel): $250
    Delegate (No hotel needed): $300 
    Guest (shared hotel room with registered Delegate): $300 

  • What Does My Registration Fee Include?

    Your registration fee covers a portion of the costs to house, feed, and train up to 100 delegates.  Please note we are unable to issue refunds, so make sure that you are eligible and able to attend before you complete your registration or make travel arrangements.     Registration for delegates includes: 

    One hotel room at the Hyatt for three to four nights (Check-in Sunday or Monday; Check-out Thursday)
    Breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday-Wednesday; Breakfast and lunch on Thursday
    *Optional Day of Service on Monday, May 20
    Full Briefing Day Training on Tuesday, May 21
    All training materials
    Leave-behind materials for members of congress
    Evening receptions and special events

    Registration for guests includes: 

    One hotel room that is shared with a registered delegate for up to four nights
    Breakfast and dinner Monday-Wednesday
    Evening receptions and special events

    *The NAMM Foundation Day of Service is an optional event that occurs on Monday, May 20 from 8-11:30 am in conjunction with D.C. Public Schools. Delegates are asked to arrive in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, May 19 if they plan to attend.  Please contact Eric Ebel if you would like more information.  

  • Does NAMM cover travel?

    Fly-In participants are responsible for their own round-trip travel to and from Washington, D.C. as well as ground transportation to and from the hotel.

  • Can I get a refund if I am unable to attend the Fly-In?

    Registration fees are non-refundable due to NAMM's liability for room blocks and banquet guarantees.

  • Tell me more about Hotel Accomodations.

    NAMM provides up to four (4) nights hotel accommodations between Sunday, May 19 (for Day of Service participants) through Thursday, May 23. Arrangements to extend arrival and departure dates are subject to availability and are at your own expense. Please submit check in and check out dates during registration; shortly after NAMM Staff will be in touch with the Hyatt to confirm availability.

    Delegates will be staying at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. The address is 400 New Jersey Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C., USA, 20001. For amenities or specific information about accommodations contact the hotel directly at 202-737-1234.

    Check-in and Check-out Times

    Check-in is 3 pm; check-out is 12 pm.

    Is there free Wi-Fi at the Hyatt Regency?

    Wi-Fi is complimentary in hotel rooms and an access code will be given to you upon check in.

    When will I receive my hotel confirmation #?

    Delegates and guests will receive their hotel confirmations in early May.

    Can I park my car at the hotel?

    Yes. When you check in ask the front desk to give you a parking pass. NAMM will cover hotel parking fees.

  • I need recommendations for Travel.

    Which Airport Should I Fly Into?

    We suggest Reagan National Airport (DCA) or Dulles International (IAD).

    Reagan National Airport (DCA) We suggest using Lyft, Uber or a Taxi Service. Note that estimated travel time is five miles from the Hyatt Regency; drive takes less than 15 minutes.

    Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) We suggest using Lyft, Uber or a Taxi Service. Note that estimated travel time is 27 miles from the Hyatt Regency; drive takes about one hour with traffic.

    How do I get to the Hyatt Regency if I am taking the train?

    From Union Station:
    Visit Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to plan your trip. Union Station is a major rail hub that is conveniently located 3 blocks from the Hyatt Regency.

  • When do I get my badge and when do I need to wear it?

    Your badge will be in your welcome package, delivered to you when you check into the Hyatt Regency. Please wear your badge for all Fly-In events and functions.

  • What will the weather be like and what is the dress code?

    The average temperature in May is 65 degrees, with daytime highs in the 70s and nighttime lows in the 50s. Note that rain is typical in May, so be sure to bring a raincoat and an umbrella.

    The dress code for all Fly-In events is business attire. On Thursday, business casual attire is permitted unless you are conducting Hill visits. Also please note that comfortable shoes are a necessity!

  • Anything I need to bring that I’m forgetting?

    Please remember to bring: business cards; phone and laptop chargers; raincoat and umbrella; cash for tips; medications; and comfortable walking shoes.

  • Which Fly-In events are optional to attend?

    The Day of Service on Monday, May 20, and the SupportMusic Coalition Meeting on Thursday, May 23.

  • Is there anything I can do to prepare before meeting with Members of Congress?

    If you are interested in becoming a team leader during Hill visits with Representatives, please email Jessica Cortez. Team leaders are NAMM Fly-In alumni volunteers that coordinate communication between Delegates and Senate and House education staffers. Since NAMM delegates often share the same representatives, outreach coordination is necessary to avoid duplicate requests.

  • What is the "ask" for this year's Fly-In?

    This year we will continue to emphasize the vital role of music in learning and needed policy and funding supports from the Department of Education and Congressional budget processes.

  • How do I leverage social media?

    To receive Fly-In news and updates, follow NAMM on Twitter and Facebook, and Mary Luehrsen on Twitter. When tweeting about the Fly-In, use the hashtag #NAMMFlyIn.

    Don’t forget to tweet to your members of congress. Find Twitter handles for members of congress here. Suggested copy: “In May I’ll be in D.C. advocating for #musiceducation with @NAMM, and speaking with @MemberofCongress. #NAMMFlyIn.

  • How Can I Stay Involved in Music Education Advocacy after the Fly-In? 

    Participating NAMM members will be connected with other delegates in their states as part of NAMM’s Coalition on Coalitions (CoC) state advocacy effort.  The CoCs provide support for advocates working in their states and local communities and continues year-round with meetings at the January NAMM Show and at Summer NAMM. For more information about joining (or starting) a state coalition contact Eric Ebel.
