My musical interest started in the 4th grade playing trombone in the school band. I continued my music into high school where I also took shop classes and was considering becoming a machinist.
When I took my trombone in for its first repairs, I fell in love with the work the technician was doing. It seemed like a wonderful combination of music and machinists skills. As luck would have it, he was looking for an apprentice.
I apprenticed after school for my last two years of high school and full time for another two years. In 1967 I moved to California and went to work at the Benge Trumpet Factory. I also worked my day off at the Williams Trombone Factory. I opened my first repair shop in 1971 and started my first retail/rental operation in 1980. From 1981 through 1983, I taught night classes in wind instrument repair at Pasadena City College. In 1986, I went to work for the Los Angeles Unified School Districts repair shop. With the aid of one part time employee, I continued to run my business on the side while I worked for the School District.
I retired from the District in 2003 and now run a full service Band & Orchestra Music store in partnership with my wife.
