Deb Taren Band
“Never Say Never” best applies to Debra Taren, lead vocalist for The Deb Taren Band. Never a vocalist in her youth, she “Never” intended to become one as an adult. She credits her Uncle Conrad of Los Lobos for introducing her, when she was just a child, to a variety of bands such as King Crimson, Uriah Heap, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, The Stones, Eric Burden & The Animals & many more groups. This introduction combined with her mother’s love for jazz standards helped kick-start her own passion for music. Deb has always been a fan of live music - it wasn’t until she was challenged to try her hand at a karaoke singalong that Deb considered “singing” as an artistic outlet worth exploring. Deb became a virtual “secret songstress” for only a likened few. Stepping out of the karaoke closet for a close friend, she met with an audience that celebrated her clandestine talent - this performance led to an offer by a local & notable punk group (Los Illegals) who shared her same interests in alternative music - which resulted in a collaborated effort of acoustic shows that mixed two guitars backing Deb’s campy versions of jazz standards along with punk and blues covers. Deb playfully describes this union as her musical Molotov Cocktail. It was this type of luck and chance that led her to gigs with other bands and live “call up” performances wherever she went - from L.A., to Europe or The Far East.
Her love for jazz, punk, garage, blues, 60’s & 70’s rock compelled her to start her own band, The Debi Dagger Band, a band that appeals to audiences of mixed demographics, a music for everyone kind of group. A few years ago, Debi fell in love with the Long Beach Blues scene,
consequently, The Deb Taren Band was born. Although she wouldn’t describe herself as a blues singer, Debi loves blending her smooth vocals - with a hint of raspy - to arrive at a mix of
jazz & a lighter style of blues. Fresh from playing The Long Beach New Blues Festival, The
Deb Taren Band left the audience wowed and energized with their upbeat collection of blues originals & stylized versions of Jimmie Vaughan, Ronnie Earl, Candye Kane, Alvin Lee, Sam & Dave, Robin Rogers & Jimi Hendrix tunes. The band’s musical tastes fall under the blues categories that include Jazz, Swing, Jump, Boogie Woogie and Rock. As a musical family, the greatest reward we receive is when we see the wonderful time the audience is having at one of our performances.
Taren is extremely proud to be joined by the musical talents of Joe Manchego, Bassist, a soulful vocalist who is the former band leader of The Rhythm Kings. Over-the-years, Joe has opened for such notable groups as John Mayall, Tommy Castro, Coco Montoya and for the vintage classic circuit: The Drifters’, Coasters, Johnny Otis & Benny King.
Keeping the beat is seasoned Drummer, Steve Roybal – Impressively, Steve has toured world-wide with the likes of Ike Cole, Tina Turner, War, Red Bone, Sugar Cane Harris, Papa John Creach, Muddy Waters, Bobby Rush, Little Milton and Cannibal & the Headhunters.
Joined by the velvet fingers of Kirk Nelson on keyboards. Kirk’s jazz and blues vocal talents help enhance the eclectic sounds of The Deb Taren Band. Kirk has shared the stage and recorded with such greats as Bo Diddley, Bobby Blue Bland and James Cotton - to more contemporary artists like Taj Mahal, Elvin Bishop, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and The Brad Wilson Band.
Guitarist extraordinaire, Cisco Robles, brings the house down. Cisco’s impressive musical credentials are: leading his own band, Cisco & the Divine Order; recorded with Marvin Gaye, Earth, Wind & Fire, Douglas Gibbs & Howard (Shalamar) Hewitt; and video work with Cold Play. He toured with the Philadelphia Story and shared the stage with Diana & the Deductibles, Chaeya & her Dark Secrets and has current and past endorsements from companies such as D & A Guitar Stands, Brace Wireless, GigFX Pedals, Black Anvil Strings, Rainbow Strings, Dunlop Strings and Rotosound Strings, just to name a few.
The Deb Taren Band will be releasing their first recording in 2017.
