Can-Do Musos - A Global Voice for Musicians with a Disability
Can-Do Musos – The global voice for challenged musicians from all over the world.
On this cold New York day, -2C (31F) and snow, Drummers Dom Famularo (http://www.domfamularo.com) , David Segal (http://www.davidsegaldrums.com) from New York who lives with a condition called Arthrogryposis, Mike Mignogna from Tennessee who lives with Cerebral Palsy, and Andrew Hewitt (http://www.drummerstix.com.au) from Sydney Australia who also lives with Cerebral Palsy came together to throw around some ideas.
During the meeting the frustrations of being musicians with challenges was discussed in depth, how so much talent gets overlooked because of disabilities. We decided then and there we wanted to change people’s views of how they saw musicians with disabilities. Encourage talent rather than discourage.
In fact, on our website, we hardly use the term disability, because sadly people often see it as an inability.
Dom, David, Mike and Andrew decided they wanted to make a difference.
This is how Can-Do Musos was born.
Can-Do Musos was established to provide, support and showcase musicians living with a disability, no matter what playing level or instrument. Our website has musicians from all walks of life, from home players to full touring pro musicians.
In 2014, we added drummer Joe Hardy to the Can-Do Musos board. Joe is a drummer from California who was born with no legs.
Three years on, our website features 240 musos from 27 countries.
We also have the support of an international advisory committee, which is helping us spread the word about Can-Do Musos across the globe. Our advisory board consist of internationally renowned drummers and percussionists such as: Gregg Bissonette, Aldo Mazza, and Mark Schulman.
In January 2015, we held our first panel discussion in the HOT Zone at NAMM. Included on our panel was drummer Dean Zimmer, who also has arthrogryposis, and guitarist Mark Goffeney, who was born with no arms and plays with his feet.
During 2015, we launched the online Can-Do Radio Show (http://candoradio.podomatic.com) and Can-Do Musos TV through Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/candomusos). Episodes are produced monthly and showcase Can-Do Musos from all over the world.
In January 2016, we had yet another successful presentation in TEC Tracks at NAMM.
In May 2016, 10 Can-Do Musos members from Australia, UK, USA and Canada were in London filming and recording the song the “Yes I Can” BBC commercial for the British Paralympics Team.
Some members of our Can-Do Musos board represent different brands at NAMM. Andrew Hewitt is a Pearl, Zildjian, Vic Firth and Remo endorsed artist, David Segal represents Regal Tip and Sabian. Joe Hardy represents Sabian.
Can-Do Musos is lead by drumming’s global ambassador, Dom Famularo.
We figure the more people see what we do, the more people will stand up and take notice of what we CAN-DO.
