Everybody has heard about how the world is shifting towards IP and the industry is buzzing with excitement about the technologies that are making this all possible. But along with this excitement comes a lot of confusion about all of the different terms, technologies, and players that are making this possible. What’s the difference between a protocol, and standard, and a solution? Are terms like “open” and “proprietary” oversimplifications of legitimate questions about what kinds of technologies to choose? How does the dream of a group of engineers turn into something that you can actually buy? And, maybe most importantly, what does a user need to understand about all of this technology?
In this presentation, we will dig into the world of media networking to look at the different technical elements that need to work together to build a system that actually functions. Along the way, we will examine the sometimes confusing alphabet soup of standards and technology to provide a foundation for how the bits and pieces work together and what kinds of questions a user should be asking when considering different solutions. Through an exploration of technologies such as AES67, AES70, SMPTE ST 2110, and more, this session will cut through the fog to help cast some light on the complex world of creating protocols, standards, and solutions to help the music industry make that move to successfully.
