Fox Music House is providing its community with the opportunity to experience music from the safety of their porches and lawns during the COVID-19 pandemic. While in-store operations may have been temporarily halted, the retailer is committed to bringing the joys of music to the masses.

Presently, things are eerily quiet inside Fox Music House as the normally bustling operations of wedding, event, and festival season in South Carolina have ground to a halt with the COVID-19 pandemic. Shifting to an appointment-only schedule in late March, Joseph Fox, operations manager at Fox Music House, has been working at the store every day to fill customer orders and support the education staff who are working remotely with their students. Even though the store is learning to operate in new and meaningful ways for their customers, there was a lingering desire to do more. Feeling a massive void in the inability to play music for others, Fox started thinking of creative ways to engage his team and the community. “Since our new 22,000 square foot store was built around a 200-person recital hall, we decided to produce some live stream events. Even though these were a great success, our musicians missed the interaction that accompanies playing for a live audience, so we decided to load a piano onto a truck and take the music to our community. We went in search of our audience,” says Fox.

According to Fox, these mobile concerts spawned the creation of “Social Distance-SING!” The Holy City Arts and Lyric Opera (HALO), a non-profit founded by internationally renowned singers Leah Edwards and Dimitri Pittas that hopes to reclaim Charleston’s legacy as the “birthplace of opera in North America” organizes most aspects of the traveling concerts; Fox Music House provides the piano and truck, connections to various musicians, and recording equipment. At this time, there is not a solid plan for the direction the project will be taking, but Fox is committed to bringing music to the community for the foreseeable future.
