While playing on a session with Frank Zappa and the Mothers, he was asked to join the group. Alan later formed 29th & Dearborn who were signed to EMI just before punk hit the UK in the late 1970s. In the 1980s, Alan ran SOS Studios in Liverpool City Centre where he recorded many UK chart topping bands including OMD, Flock of Seagulls and Mick Hucknall of Simply Red, who joined Alan’s band Lawnmower. He also helped organize the biggest music festival in Liverpool the ‘Larks in the Park’ where bands in the second wave of Merseybeat in the 1980s took their music to the masses including Frankie goes to Hollywood and Echo & the Bunnymen. Alan plays acoustic blues guitar and harmonica as a solo artist, and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Alan hit the states where he and fellow musicians got together for a benefit gig for the musicians of New Orleans. Joe Sunseri and Cranston Clements came over for the gig and performed alongside them.
