Robert Gray was affectionately known throughout his community as the “Music Man,” a title earned through a remarkable lifetime devoted to sharing the joy of music. Over a career that spanned more than seven decades, Bob became emblematic of the passionate, relationship-driven music retailer, personally placing thousands of instruments—most notably selling an estimated 10,000 pianos—into the homes of families across the St. Louis region. Born in Littleton, New Hampshire, Bob’s musical journey began with formal studies at the New England Conservatory of Music before performing professionally as a cellist with the Tulsa Symphony. After relocating to Missouri in 1960, he served as principal cellist for the Kirkwood Symphony while simultaneously building a thriving career in music retail. As a store manager and trusted advisor, Bob delivered what he often described as “fun, relaxation, and home enjoyment” through music—an ethos that guided every customer interaction. In addition to his retail success, Bob was an accomplished keyboardist, performing at the St. Louis Cardinals Club, conventions, and private events, further deepening his connection to the community he served. During his NAMM Oral History interview, his enthusiasm for the business was unmistakable, as he reflected on the sweeping technological changes that reshaped his profession—from two-lane highways and handwritten orders to fax machines and mobile communication. Respected by peers and beloved by customers, Bob received numerous industry honors and was credited with helping place more than 20,000 musical instruments into the hands of aspiring musicians. His legacy lives on not only in those instruments, but in the countless lives enriched by his unwavering belief in the power of music.
