Oral History Information

Christoph Kemper is a German engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur whose innovations have profoundly shaped modern music technology. As co-founder of Access Music in the 1990s, Kemper led the development of the acclaimed Access Virus synthesizer, a virtual-analog instrument celebrated for its distinctive sound, deep modulation capabilities, and reliability. The Virus quickly became a defining tool for electronic, industrial, and pop musicians, helping establish the sonic character of contemporary electronic music. Kemper later transformed the world of guitar amplification with the introduction of the Kemper Profiling Amplifier, pioneering technology that analyzes and captures the sonic behavior of real amplifiers with remarkable accuracy. By allowing musicians to digitally profile and recreate their own sounds, the instrument fundamentally changed recording, touring, and studio workflows for guitarists worldwide. Known for blending rigorous engineering with a musician-focused philosophy, Kemper’s work bridges analog warmth and digital precision, leaving a lasting legacy across both electronic music production and guitar innovation.
