Jim Van Hook
Oral History Information
Jim Van Hook played an enormous role in the growth of the church music publishing industry. As the founder of Brentwood Music and later as president of Word, he oversaw two of the three largest Christian music companies in the United States. A passionate educator and advocate for music and ministry, Jim was deeply committed to using music as a tool for learning, inspiration, and spiritual connection. He consistently championed the importance of music education and encouraged young musicians, worship leaders, and educators to see music as both a calling and a service. His insight into the state of the industry, as well as the changes he observed over the decades, shared during his NAMM Oral History interview, was both fascinating and historically important. Jim grew up in southern Georgia as the son of a preacher, attended Bible school, and began playing trumpet at Peabody University, where he earned his master’s degree in music education. His lifelong dedication to teaching and advocacy was evident in every chapter of his career. Jim’s NAMM Oral History interview was completed on April 27, 2006.
