Categories

Bill has experimented with mapping his catalog to our draft. I have added categories that he needed in this version. Please see my comments at http://www.namm.org/initiatives/b2b/docs/draft-published-categories#comm...

December 31, 2010
In anticipation of our January meeting, I have posted a revised version of the document. It includes a new column call 'Friendly Name'. I have populated (by hand!) each entry with what I think is a reasonable name for the category. This naming scheme should be reviewed before publishing. Additionally, I have added a new sheet that contains the 'Friendly Names' and assigned codes. They are grouped and ordered alphabetically.

This revision also includes codes for items where sections are identified by '?'. In those cases, the section has been mapped to '00' or '000'. I also added a number of categories that I thought we had missed. For example, we have a category for dulcimer music, but we did not have an equivalent instrument category.

September 29, 2010
Following today's conversation the revised document contains these changes:

  • Codes are no longer starting with leading zeros
  • Dashes in the combined codes have been removed

August 25, 2010

I did some revising of the sheets in the workbook to hopefully make this easier to understand:

  • The old category sheet we started with is now called "Categories - Old"
  • The original Print Music sheet is now called "Print Music - Old"
  • Duplicate lines or ones marked for deletion have been moved to a sheet called "Needs Assigned"
  • Added a Cat Num Lookup sheet which lists all possible level names, and assigns a code to each

Edits made:

  • Added a "Category Code" column (calculation based on columns M through P, which do lookups to the Cat Num Lookup sheet)
  • Added a "Published Category Name" column so we can see what the published names would look like.
  • Deleted the purple columns from the Main Sheet. Those columns still exist on the Need Assigned sheet for reference.
  • Changed "Misc" categories in print music to "Folk Instrument" where applicable. Marked resulting extraneous categories for deletion and moved to Need Assigned sheet.
  • Changed Ensemble - Choir to Ensemble - Vocal
  • Did cursory look through each level of categories for consistency (plural or not, etc)
  • Under DJ & Lighting, added level 2 name of Lighting (So yes, there is now a category of DJ & Lighting - Lighting - Lighting - Lighting Other)
  • Removed "*" from all category names
  • Under Media and Software Lvl 1, I added a Level 2 of either "Media" or "Software" depending on the category.
  • Added Lvl 2 name of "Sound Reinforcement" under Audio (for speakers, etc)
  • Added Lvl 2 name of "Processors" under Audio
  • Added Lvl 2 name of "Interfaces" under Audio
  • Added Lvl 2 name of "Studio Equipment" under Audio
  • Added Lvl 2 name of "Racks, Cases, and Stands" (for multiple categories)

Questions: Under DJ & Lighting, we have a level 3 of "Decks" Seems like this should be related in some way to Audio - ? - Recording and Playback. I added a Level 2 name of "Recording and Playback" for now and assigned both groups of products to that Level 2 name.

August 11, 2010: Following the committee teleconference, the following items need to be revised:

  • Column(s) for 'Code Number' need to be added to the spreadsheet.
  • Change Misc-Misc to Folk & Traditional for the printed music sections that include those instruments.
  • Remove levels from the folk instrument(bagpipes, tinwhistle, etc)
  • Change Choir to Ensemble - Vocal

August 4, 2010: We reviewed Print Music categories. The following questions/issues are outstanding:

  • Can 'Choir' category be called 'Vocal Ensembles' in order to broaden it's application?

  • TODO: Media/Software needs to be reconciled with PM categories

July 21, 2010: We reviewed the top-level categories and create a TODO sheet that is integrate into the file. These are the task items:

  1. Delete Old Items
  2. Review Print Music categories
  3. Fill in Question Marks
  4. Make Naming consistent
  5. Remove Purple Columns
  6. Evaluate DUPES

July 14, 2010: The results of our teleconference about 'Top Level' Categories resulted in a re-think about how were are using the top level. Amy graciously edited the document to reflect a refactoring of the top level in the document from July 14 listed below.

June 17, 2010 : Nashville Meeting The column labeled "Level 2 Alpha" needs to go away as we determine a Department for each line. "Level 3 Alpha" has not yet been reviewed.
