Job Title
Organist, Product Engineer

Lanny Davis built a remarkable career at the intersection of music and engineering, combining his talents as a pianist, organist, and product designer to advance the evolution of keyboard instruments. After studying engineering at the University of South Carolina in the 1960s, Lanny spent more than three decades traveling the world as a product design specialist and performance artist for leading companies including Lowrey Organ Company, Yamaha Corporation, Roland Corporation, Kurzweil Music Systems, Hammond Organ Company, and CBS Musical Instruments. Drawing on his classical training and technical expertise, he became determined to solve one of the most persistent challenges in electronic instruments—the feel, or “action,” of a digital keyboard—and after more than two decades of research and development secured a patent for an innovative system that allowed electronic keyboards to replicate the touch and responsiveness of an acoustic piano, even enabling adjustable key weight. His work helped bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, offering new expressive possibilities for performers. In April 2026, Lanny’s contributions and experiences were documented for the NAMM Oral History program with the assistance of his good friend and fellow organist Rosemary Bailey, who helped conduct his interview, reflecting their shared passion for music and innovation.
