Tomo Kurosawa
Oral History Information
Tomo Kurosawa is the president of Kurosawa Gakki, a respected Japanese musical instrument company founded by his father, Tsunesaburo Kurosawa. Growing up surrounded by music and instrument making, Tomo-san developed a deep appreciation for the industry at an early age, particularly through his father’s work building classical guitars in Japan. After completing his education, Tomo began his career in banking, gaining valuable experience that would later support the financial and operational growth of the family business. In 1998, he joined Kurosawa Gakki, where he contributed to expanding the company’s distribution network, including its important relationship with Martin Guitars. Through this connection, Chris Martin became a family friend and was instrumental in introducing the Kurosawa family to the NAMM Oral History program. Tomo went on to oversee retail operations and was named president in 2012, continuing to guide the company’s growth and international presence. Following his father’s passing, Tomo reflected on his legacy by watching his Oral History interview, gaining new insight into both his father’s life and the early days of the company.
