GenNext, Music Education Days, The Nonprofit Management Institute, Special Events and More Return to The 2022 NAMM Show

For emerging college music students and faculty, K-12 music teachers and administrators, and nonprofit leadership, signature programs and events of The NAMM Foundation will return to The 2022 NAMM Show, June 3-5 in Anaheim, California.

From the professional development program tracks of GenNext, Music Education Days, and The Nonprofit Management Institute to a variety of opportunities to network and reconnect, attendees will experience a career-expanding and innovative program to spark the next great idea and make connections to advance music education.

GenNext

As a collaboration between The NAMM Foundation and The College Music Society (CMS), GenNext will offer dedicated programming and access to The NAMM Show across 27+ different sessions and events for college music students and faculty. Notable sessions include “Cross-training in Music Technology: Lessons From the Pandemic Applied to the Future,” which will analyze how we can cross-train amongst the widely varied sub-disciplines of music technology and music writ large; “Advocating Diverse Career Opportunities in Music,” which will explore the need for advocacy for nontraditional careers in the music; and “Understanding Digital Music Rights and Revenue,” which will demonstrate and explain the complex paths that digital music rights and revenue follow from the creator to the consumer and back.

For emerging leaders seeking one-on-one mentorship, GenNext will present “Network with the Pros: Quick Tips for Having A Career in the Music Industry.” Students will have the opportunity to engage in one-on-one speed-networking sessions with music industry professionals representing a cross-section of careers, from marketing, manufacturing and small business ownership to entertainment technology, artist management and pro-audio.

Music Education Days

For music teachers and school administrators seeking ‘what’s next’ in music products and classroom technologies, The NAMM Foundation, in collaboration with Technology In Music Education (TI:ME), will present 30+ sessions and events designed to inform, inspire and engage with the tools relevant to today’s music classrooms. Session highlights include “Music Administration Collaborative. Plan Your Program’s Success: Getting Started with Strategic Arts Planning;” “Rethinking Music Education in the Post Covid-19 World;” “Teacher Tech Talk,” which will featureTI:ME Teacher of the Year winners; “Building a Nationally-Recognized Music Program: It's All About Collaborative Structures;” and “Solution Based Learning Opportunities Addressing Current Topics in Music Education.”

In a special workshop, Kendall Isadore and Élise Sharp of The String Queens will present “Exploring SEL Strategies with The String Queens.” The workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to engage in a pedagogical journey employing a variety of interactive activities and individual reflections that equip them with concrete and actionable skills and strategies to create or enhance an educational environment centered in the five core components of social-emotional learning as a means to deliver engaging and emotionally fulfilling content in direct relationship to a particular subject.

The Music Education Leadership Call to ActionSummit at the Show will raise critical questions currently facing music education and its future, and frame questions, opportunities, and solutions for “what we need to work on,” both collectively and individually to advance music learning opportunities for all students. Join Bob Morrison, Quadrant Research; Russ Sperling, San Diego Unified School District; Lynn Tuttle, American String Teachers Association; Dr. James Weaver, National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS); and Kendall Isadore and Élise Sharp of The String Queens as they discuss teacher shortages, the need for a broader music curriculum, and why we must all continue to insist that music education remains core to well-rounded learning opportunities for all students.

The Nonprofit Management Institute

NAMM’s Nonprofit Management Institute will provide organizations and their representatives with sessions to grow and succeed in creating a world with more music makers. Located on the stage inside NAMM Member Center at the Anaheim Convention Center, the program will offer a certificate of completion to partner and grantee organizations, as well as to music and arts education nonprofits that complete the four-session series. Session topics include “An Agile Nonprofit is a Successful Nonprofit:” “Unlocking Innovation to Up Your Nonprofit’s Game;”Beyond Good Intentions: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Programming, Operations, and Governance;” and “Reevaluate Your Mission and Vision to Meet the Needs of Your Community.”

NAMM Foundation Special Events

The Grand Rally for Music Education featuring Eric Whitacre and Gateways Brass Collective

A perennial favorite, “The Grand Rally for Music Education,” returns to The 2022 NAMM Show on Saturday, June 4 at 10:00 a.m. Located inside the Anaheim Convention Center in Ballroom B on the third floor. This year’s event presents the Gateways Brass Collective, the only all-Black professional brass quintet in the U.S. that tours regularly and whose repertoire includes traditional and jazz performances. Groundbreaking composer and conductor Eric Whitacre also takes the stage to bring live and virtual performance together in a hybrid performance of "Sing Gently," featuring Ashley Ballou-Bonnema creator of sINgSPIRE, a virtual choir for individuals with Cystic Fibrosis. Presented by The NAMM Foundation in collaboration with Conn-Selmer, Hal Leonard, JackTrip, and Yamaha .

The Careers in Music Summit

On Saturday from 4:00p.m.- 5:00p.m. at the NAMM U Idea Center, industry leaders from across the crossroads of professional communities will answer, ‘What does it take to have a successful career in the music industry?’ Moderated by NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond, panelists of notable industry names, including David De Cristofaro, University of The Arts/Berklee College of Music; Robin Sassi, San Diego Music Studio; Ethan Castro, EDGE Sound Research; and artists, BYOS (Bring Your Own Style), will offer insight into their career trajectories and share practical insights for long-term success.

All-Industry Drum Circle
All NAMM Show attendees are encouraged to drum up enthusiasm for music-making at NAMM’s annual All-Industry Drum Circle. On Saturday, June 4 from 5:00p.m.–6:00p.m., the Palm Court will come alive with a rhythmic celebration. The annual event, which has been held for over 20 years, offers participants a chance to enjoy the collective music-making experience. Percussion instruments will be provided on behalf of Remo, Inc.

Ukulele Circle
On Sunday, June 5, from 11:00a.m. – 12:00p.m., the Palm Court will be filled with the melodic sounds of the instrument known as the “jumping flea,” the ukulele! In collaboration with Kala Brand Music and facilitated by Ukulenny, the event will gather music-makers of all abilities to unleash their island spirit.

The NAMM Foundation programs and events are just part of The 2022 NAMM Show. Other professional development opportunities from the likes of NAMM U, TEC Tracks, Audio Engineering Society, Advanced Audio + Applications Exchange, the Event Safety Alliance, Entertainment Services Technology Association and more, will present. The show will also see the return of much-loved industry award events, including the Top 100 Dealer Awards, Parnelli Awards, TEC Awards, and She Rocks Awards, with nightly concerts on the Grand Plaza.
