Matt Bell
Oral History Information
Matt Bell’s passion for music began at an early age when he first heard the sound of a violin in church at just two years old. Inspired by the instrument and by his mother, a choir director, he became fascinated with the violin and eagerly pursued both school music programs and private lessons. Matt also developed a love for the sound of horns in his favorite recordings, particularly Motown, which led him to join his school marching band as a trumpet player. After earning a degree in chemical engineering, he returned to performing, playing fiddle in a pop band where he explored fiddle styles and genres such as bluegrass. His interest in amplifying the violin’s sound soon led to a deep fascination with electric violins and the evolving world of electric string instruments. Matt has performed for many years with groups including Key West the Band and Spare Change, and in 2019 he turned his attention to songwriting, creating the violin-driven rock album Window Into Wild. He was also among the first musicians to earn a master’s degree focused on electric strings.
