Alex Carozza
Oral History Information
Alex Carozza was an extraordinary craftsman and accordion repair specialist whose reputation drew professional musicians from around the world to his shop, Alex Music, on New York’s famed 48th Street—once known as “Music Row.” Known for his meticulous attention to detail and deep understanding of the instrument, Alex was widely respected and beloved among accordionists, many of whom trusted only him with their most valued instruments. After beginning his career at Sam Ash, Alex opened his own shop in the early 1970s, where he spent decades refining his craft. His experience as both a performer and technician led him to design his own reed system for the accordion, further demonstrating his commitment to innovation and sound. Visitors to his shop often marveled at the level of craftsmanship, where master luthier Carlo Greco worked alongside him at the bench. Alex’s passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of artistry, dedication, and deep connection to the musicians he served.
