Ben Lewry is an instrument designer, luthier, and innovator whose work bridges the worlds of traditional guitar craftsmanship and modern music technology. As the founder of Visionary Instruments, established in 2008 in Oakland, California, Ben has focused on creating custom guitars and performance systems that integrate MIDI control, digital interfaces, and cutting-edge design. Ben’s passion for building began at an early age, leading him to construct his first guitar as a teenager and later spend years working as a repair technician and custom builder. His exploration of combining guitars with digital technology resulted in groundbreaking designs, including instruments with embedded MIDI controllers, accelerometers, and visual elements that allow musicians to control effects and software in real time without compromising tone. His creations have been used by major touring artists and reflect a commitment to expanding what a guitar can be in a modern performance environment. Through Visionary Instruments, Ben continues to push the boundaries of instrument design, merging craftsmanship with innovation. He was interviewed for the NAMM Oral History program in 2026.
