Oral History Information

Bobby Brooks Wilson is the son of famed soul singer Jackie Wilson, though he did not always know it. Bobby grew up loving music and only discovered his biological father’s identity after many people commented on how much he looked and sounded like him. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Bobby began his musical career in Hawaii, where he joined The Love Notes. While fans of his father were initially skeptical, they were quickly won over by his powerful and soulful voice. In his NAMM Oral History interviews, Bobby spoke about the influence of Otis Redding and how working with an opera-trained vocal coach helped shape his vocal style. He was first interviewed by the NAMM Oral History program in 2020 during the pandemic, and again in 2026 during his first visit to The NAMM Show. Bobby continues to perform around the world, sharing both original material and tributes to his father’s iconic songs.
