Ronnie Gardiner banged on his mother’s pots and pans enough that it encouraged her to buy him a toy drum set for Christmas when he was not yet four years old. He played all throughout school and when he was 12 years old he was the youngest member of a jazz big band. Growing up in his hometown of Westerly, RI, Ronnie landed the position of drummer for the house band at Fiddler’s Three, a club that attracted seasoned jazz players. This audio only interview was conducted for a radio program by Dan Del Fiorentino and donated to the NAMM Oral History program: Illinois Jacquet gained fame as a jazz saxophonist beginning his career with the Milton Larkin Band when Illinois was just 15. Four years later he recorded his signature solo on the song "Flying Home" while with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. The song's popularity opened the doors for him to perform as a soloist and travel throughout Europe. Poul Marno Sørensen inherited Marno Sørensen Music store from his father located for many years in the heart of Copenhagen. Poul remembers how his father worked as a musician in a circus before he settled to open the shop in 1925. Many important jazz musicians were customers here such as Archie Shepp and Dexter Gordon. Once Marno died Poul took over the store and kept the tradition alive until he retired 2014.
