FRAP (Flat Response Audio Pickup)

Roger Glenn recalls with a smile the years he attended the NAMM Show as a product endorser, showcasing the FRAP.  As a second generation jazz musician (his father was Tyree Glenn who played with Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington) Roger gained a noted reputation for being able to play several instruments.  His main instrument for years was the flute, which Arnie attached his FRAP, flat response audio pickup.  The pickup was created for use on acoustic instruments and Roger’s versatile skills provided the perfect setting to showcase the strength of the pickups.

Arnie Lazarus invented what is largely regarded as the first three dimensional transducer for musical instruments in 1969.  That same year he established a company that echoed the name of his product, FRAP.  FRAP, or flat response audio pickup, was created for use on acoustic instruments.  He also created an innovative wind instrument pick up using piezoresistance technology, which benifited musicians such as Eddie Harris, Roger Glenn and Herbie Mann (among others).  This pickup was successfully used on the flute, saxophone and other instruments. Susan Mazer and her husband, Dallas Smith, established the C.A.R.E. Channel, which serves over a thousand hospitals by providing peaceful and relaxing music 24 hours a day. Their goal was to reduce the noises of a healthcare setting and to help patients benefit from the healing power of music. Along her incredible musical journey, Susan has helped design electro-acoustic harps, has worked with leading harp manufacturers, became a sought after jazz harpist, played with Frank Sinatra (among many others), and earned her doctorate with the goal of using music to help those in need.
