Desi Nelson built a rich and meaningful life in music despite being born with limited hearing, discovering early on that determination and passion could overcome any obstacle. As a young musician, he taught himself to play organ and piano, performing loudly in his father’s church so he could fully experience the sound, and went on to establish and conduct several church choirs. Encouraged by a friend to visit a local piano and organ store, Nelson soon discovered a gift for helping others find instruments that brought music into their lives. His dedication earned him a prestigious Salesman of the Year honor during a NAMM Show, reflecting his belief that great sales begin with listening—a skill he developed deeply from childhood. After eight successful years at Gould Music in Southern California, founder Tom Gould helped Nelson open his own store in San Bernardino in 1983, which grew to five Southern California locations and another in Auburn. Through organ clubs, clinics, and lasting friendships with artists including Rosemary Bailey, Nelson brought joy and music to countless people, a legacy he continues to cherish with pride.
