Gunnar Biggs
Oral History Information
Gunnar Biggs grew up in a deeply musical family, guided by his father, Dr. Millard Biggs, a professional French horn player and longtime professor at San Diego State University. Following in his father’s footsteps, Gunnar became both a performer and an educator, teaching double bass at SDSU for over 25 years and directing jazz ensembles at Palomar Community College, while also maintaining a thriving private studio. Beginning his own musical path on trumpet and French horn, he soon discovered the double bass—an instrument that, as he says, continues to speak to his soul. Gunnar’s early career included performances with the San Diego Youth Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, and a brief but formative tour with the legendary Buddy Rich Orchestra. Over the years, he has collaborated with icons such as Charles McPherson and Tommy Flanagan, while inspiring countless students, including his very first pupil, the now-renowned bassist Nathan East.
