Jacobo Cargua
Oral History Information
Jacobo Cargua grew up in Riobamba, Ecuador, surrounded by music that has been a constant source of joy and inspiration throughout his life. Encouraged by his artistic family, Jacobo explored a wide range of instruments—from melodica, guitar, piano, bass, and flutes to cymbals in his school band—nurtured by dedicated teachers and later guided by the renowned guitarist Rugeik Kawayashi, who inspired him to practice with discipline and passion. His first role as a high school music teacher sparked a lifelong love of sharing music with children of all ages, a calling he continued for six years before expanding his performing career. Married to a violinist and teacher, and raising children who are also musicians, Jacobo has built a life fully immersed in music both at home and on the stage. For over two decades, he has brought his talents to audiences around the world as a cruise ship musician, including memorable performances aboard the Celebrity Flora in the Galápagos Islands. At the heart of all his endeavors—whether teaching, performing, or inspiring his family—is Jacobo’s belief in the power of music to bring joy, meaning, and connection to others.
