Jim Trageser

Jim Trageser is a writer, journalist, and San Diego jazz historian whose appreciation for musicians and their stories has been a hallmark of his career. Growing up in Ohio, Jim took music lessons at an early age, playing cornet in the third grade before studying piano and, by fifth grade, guitar. While he realized that becoming a professional musician might not be his path, those early experiences gave him an enduring appreciation for the dedication, discipline, and artistry required to master an instrument. Jim found his own creative voice through writing and journalism, using his talents to chronicle the lives and careers of musicians whose passion led them to a life in music. His work has included writing for Living Blues magazine as well as documenting the vibrant San Diego jazz community and its rich musical heritage. At the heart of Jim’s work is a genuine passion for lifting up artists and ensuring their talents and contributions are recognized and celebrated. Whether jazz, blues, or another musical style, Jim approaches each artist with curiosity, respect, and an appreciation for the individual journey behind the music. Over the years, Jim has also been a special friend and ardent supporter of the NAMM Oral History Program, generously sharing his knowledge, research, and connections to help preserve important stories for future generations.
