Tony White
Oral History Information
Tony White's passion for music began at an early age. When he was just three years old, his father brought home a piano, and a year later introduced him to the music of Elton John with a cassette tape and piano tutor book. Inspired by what he heard, Tony began piano lessons before he had even started school. More than four decades later, Tony's passion for music remains as strong as ever. Alongside his role at Bonners, he enjoys an active career as a professional musician, performing at venues across the UK. Working from his own rehearsal and recording studio, he continues to develop new musical projects and is due to appear later this year at the legendary 606 Club in Chelsea, one of London's most renowned live music venues. Founded in 1976, Bonners Music established itself as one of the United Kingdom's respected music retailers. Tony's own journey with the company began at the age of fifteen through a schoolwork experience placement. After officially joining the business in 1989, he worked his way through virtually every aspect of the company, beginning with weekend work in the original full-line music store before eventually becoming Managing Director. Throughout his career, Tony has remained committed to combining traditional customer service with innovative thinking. As the retail landscape evolved, he helped transform Bonners into one of the UK's leading specialist piano and keyboard retailers, while embracing the opportunities presented by online media. In 2015, Tony uploaded a simple video demonstration of himself playing and explaining a digital piano for the Bonners website. The response from customers was immediate. People appreciated seeing an experienced musician demonstrate an instrument honestly and naturally, rather than relying solely on manufacturer marketing or written product descriptions. Recognizing the value of this approach, Tony began producing increasingly detailed demonstrations that effectively brought the showroom experience into customers' homes. These videos became a defining part of Bonners' success. Customers were able to get to know both Tony and the company long before setting foot in one of the showrooms, creating a level of trust that traditional advertising rarely achieves. His presentations have since been viewed by millions of musicians worldwide, and he has become a familiar face within the industry, often being recognized by visitors at international events such as the NAMM Show. Today, Tony regards these videos as one of the most important developments in Bonners' history, describing them as "the lifeblood" of the business. They continue to reflect the values on which the company has built its reputation: expert advice from real musicians, exceptional customer service, and a genuine passion for helping people enjoy making music.
