Oral History Information

Alison Brown is a Grammy Award–winning banjoist, composer, producer, and music industry leader whose career reflects both deep bluegrass roots and a spirit of musical exploration. Alison’s musical journey began in a family transformed by music when her mother purchased guitars for both parents in 1971, inspiring them to become bluegrass players. After the family moved to San Diego in 1974, all three became active members of the local bluegrass community, where Alison first studied guitar and developed her fingerstyle technique. Discovering an Earl Scruggs recording changed everything; although mastering the banjo proved challenging at first, she soon fell in love with the instrument that would define her career. As a teenager, Alison performed at Magic Mountain and began composing instrumental music, a creative practice she continues today. After studying at Harvard University and later earning an MBA from UCLA, she joined Alison Krauss & Union Station for three formative years before launching her own ensemble and artistic path. Blending bluegrass, jazz, Celtic, and contemporary influences, Alison has earned international acclaim as both an innovative performer and co-founder of Compass Records Group, helping expand opportunities for acoustic musicians worldwide while continuing to inspire audiences through her musicianship and leadership.
