Dick Clark

Ace Cannon grew up in Mississippi singing with his father on street corners and in church, and he knew even as a small child that he wanted to have a life in music.  When he was ten his father drove him to Amro Music in Memphis and let him pick out an alto saxophone by CG Conn.  Right there in the store, he played "Beer Barrel Polka".

This audio only interview was conducted for a radio program by Dan Del Fiorentino and donated to the NAMM Oral History program: Larry Elgart led a dance band with his brother, Les, which recorded a number of bestselling albums beginning in the 1950s. Their "Campus Hop" album was among the first of its kind to focus on the college audience and became a top seller in 1954. A few years later, Larry and Les wrote a song "Bandstand Boogie" for Dick Clark's American Bandstand dance program, which remained the theme song for the show until it went off the air. Will Glover was among the first wave of surf rock guitarists when he formed a band with several friends from high school in 1961.  The Pyramids, the Long Beach, California based rock group had a big instrumental hit with “Penetration” in 1963.  The songs success led to several important performances including a dozen TV programs such as Dick Clark’s American Bandstand and the movie Bikini Beach starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon.

Phil Jost had a very interesting career in music as a musician before joining the sales team at St. Louis Music in 1974 and thus entering the music products industry. In his early days, being classically trained on the piano, Phil played keyboards and early synthesizers for dances, concerts and recordings for many years. Even after joining St. Louis Music, Phil continued to play. Phil has appeared on American Bandstand with Dick Clark, Solid Gold with Dionne Warwick, and the Tonight Show with Johnnie Carson. Marvin Maxwell opened Mom’s Music in Louisville, Kentucky with his wife Beverly in 1981. He also designed and developed a line of music themed toilet seats called “Jammin’ Johns,” which were first sold in his music store then in shops around the world. Marvin’s love of music began when he played drums for rock bands and artists such as Lonnie Mack. He also toured as part of Dick Clark’s Caravan of the Stars!

Eddie Tuduri broke his neck while in the ocean off the California shore in 1997, and turned to music to serve him during the healing process.
