Roman Dernowski
Oral History Information
Roman Dernowski is a music industry professional whose career bridges performance, pro audio, and international music retail. Raised in Kazakhstan, Roman grew up surrounded by music, inspired by his father, a renowned classical violinist who performed widely and introduced him to both classical and rock music. This early exposure, including attending live concerts, helped shape Roman’s passion for sound and technology. As a young musician and student, Roman developed a strong interest in pro audio, mixing sound for events and clubs while pursuing his education, including earning an MBA in Chicago. He later joined his family’s business, which his father founded in 2001 as the first digital recording studio in Kazakhstan. The company expanded into multiple retail locations and distribution, representing major global brands and supporting a growing regional market. By 2016, Roman was leading marketing efforts, including work supporting stores in neighboring countries such as Uzbekistan, where traditional instruments remain an important part of the musical landscape. Proud of his heritage, Roman became the first individual from Kazakhstan to be interviewed for the NAMM Oral History program in 2026.
