The Music Instinct: Science and Song, is a television documentary that brings together researchers and musicians to investigate the biological, emotional and psychological impact of music. Elena Mannes and Margaret Smilow, director and producer (respectively), of the two-hour documentary--developed with major funding from the National Science Foundation--were awarded the Grand Prix at Pariscience 2009, an international science film festival.

The 2009 Music China show recently concluded in Shanghai and NAMM, the trade association of the international music products industry, once again organized its NAMM University professional development sessions for show attendees. More than 1,100 people attended the NAMM University sessions, a 15 percent increase from 2008.  

NAMM, the trade association of the international music products industry, received a special commendation yesterday for the efforts of its SupportMusic Coalition at the inaugural International Music Council’s (IMC) Musical Rights Awards held during IMC’s World Forum on Music. Accepting the award on behalf of the Coalition was Gary Ingle, CEO of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), an affiliate of the SupportMusic Coalition and long-time music education and music-making advocate.

The world-renowned Oak Ridge Boys, longtime supporters of music education and music making, appeared on FOX's Huckabee this weekend to announce the online auction of a signed guitar with proceeds going to the NAMM Foundation's Wanna Play Fund.

Leaving the conference room to take the stage, “Strat 5” from Healthways was crowned the national winner of the ninth annual FORTUNE Battle of the Corporate Bands presented by NAMM and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, on Oct. 3. The band competed against seven other corporate bands from across the country selected in regional semi-final events in Los Angeles and Nashville, Tenn.

The NAMM Foundation today announced that Dennis and Elizabeth Danzik of Paradise Valley Arizona were the winning bidders of a celebrity autographed guitar donated by Gov. Mike Huckabee as part of the recent launch of the foundation’s Wanna Play Fund on FOX’s “Huckabee” program.

NAMM, the trade association of the international music products industry, today released a statement regarding recent class action lawsuits filed by plaintiffs making antitrust claims against the association.  The statement is as follows:

Legendary drummer Tommy Lee of rock band Mötley Crüe is one of three judges chosen to pick the best corporate rock band in the upcoming FORTUNE Battle of the Corporate Bands presented by NAMM, the trade association of the international music products industry, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Lee will be joined by noted musician and author Jeff Carlisi and Making Music magazine editor-in-chief Antoinette Follett as judges at the ninth annual event, taking place on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

The NAMM Foundation announced today that it will be launching its non-profit Wanna Play Fund tomorrow night on “Huckabee,” a weekly FOX News and commentary program hosted by Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas and 2008 Republican presidential candidate. The Wanna Play Fund seeks public donations to support programs and activities that strengthen music education in schools and provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn to play music.

NAMM, the trade association of the international music industry, announced today that it recently launched NAMM U Online, a full and varied library of videos, articles and interviews that supplement the popular live Breakfast Sessions and Idea Center Sessions at the NAMM trade shows. Members visiting the namm.org Web site can learn about key business topics including finance, lesson programs, retail ideas, sales and technology. All course content is provided by NAMM Members and experts including, Alan Friedman, George Hines, Pete Gamber, Nick Rail and Kevin Cranley.

Starting today, teen bands across the country are invited to step onto the stage to compete in the first-ever SchoolJam USA. This one-of-a-kind, national teen battle-of-the-bands competition is accepting applications from middle and high school students, aiming to showcase their talent and bolster much-needed support for school music programs.
