Kendrick Dial is a teaching artist, musician, and consultant whose work bridges music, education, and community engagement. Inspired early by gospel music and oldies radio, Kendrick developed a deep appreciation for how contemporary sounds are rooted in earlier traditions, particularly through sampling. His passion for music continued during his service in the U.S. Navy, where he also began writing poetry—an outlet that became central to his creative voice. Over time, he combined spoken word and music, forming groups including his band, Lyrical Groove. Kendrick’s work extends into the healing arts, where he has explored the powerful role music plays in personal and community well-being. Through his company, Creative Engagement, he has consulted with arts organizations and led workshops encouraging individuals to embrace creativity in all aspects of life. A strong advocate for purpose-driven work, he often emphasizes the importance of “living in purpose.” In his NAMM Oral History interview, Kendrick also reflected on the cultural and musical impact of the Roland TR-808 drum machine on hip hop and modern music.
