Mark Lawrence is widely recognized as one of the leading classical trombonists of his generation, with a distinguished career as an orchestral musician, soloist, chamber performer, educator, and publisher. After studying at the University of Michigan and the Curtis Institute of Music, Mark was appointed principal trombonist of the San Francisco Symphony in 1974, a position he held for 33 years. During his tenure, he appeared as a featured soloist with the orchestra and earned an international reputation for his artistry and expressive musicianship. Beyond the concert stage, Mark became a founding member of Summit Brass, performed with ensembles including Bay Brass and the Empire Brass Quintet, and appeared at leading music festivals and conferences throughout the United States and abroad. A passionate educator, he has inspired generations of brass musicians through his teaching at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Colburn School, Boston University, the Music Academy of the West, and numerous masterclasses worldwide. Together with fellow San Francisco Symphony trombonist Paul Welcomer, Mark also co-founded MarcoPaulo Publications, helping expand the repertoire and educational resources available to trombonists everywhere.
