NAMM, the trade association of the international music products industry, is encouraging everyone to discover their inner musician by picking up an instrument and playing at least once on May 4 in celebration of Music Monday. Whether you're young or older, research conducted by NAMM shows that playing music has significant developmental, social and wellness benefits. Children who play music do better in school; people over age 45 who make music can use the activity to reduce stress; and seniors who play often use it as a social outlet.

Senators Chris Dodd (D- CT) and Lamar Alexander (R-TN) today announced the release of a Government Accountability Office (GAO) study addressing access to music and arts education for public school students as a result of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Dodd and Alexander called for the study in response to reports that the testing requirements of NCLB were forcing some schools, particularly those that serve low-income and minority students, to narrow their curriculum and restrict access to music and arts education.

NAMM, the trade association of the international music products industry, today announced a new three-year deal with the City of Anaheim and the Anaheim Convention Center to continue to host “the NAMM Show,” the association’s 108-year-old trade show for the musical instruments and products industry, through 2013.

NAMM, the trade association of the international music products industry, is helping to raise awareness about the need for mentorship and support of up-and-coming young musicians by supporting the official South by Southwest “2009 Underage Day Party” at Momo’s Club. The event takes place Friday, March 20, 2009, from noon to 6 p.m., and was created to highlight talented musicians under age 21 and raise awareness about the need for mentorship, increased opportunities and overall support of young musicians by the entertainment industry.

The NAMM Foundation and Disney Channel today announced the recipients of “Disney’s High School Musical: The Music in You Grant Program” that encourages middle and high schools across the U.S. to put on their own school stage production of Disney’s “High School Musical.” This is the second year that the two organizations have teamed to support this public affairs initiative, which is designed to utilize the popularity of the “High School Musical” movies to encourage kids to get involved in music and the arts in school.

NAMM, the trade association of the international music products industry, and the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) hosted the second SchoolJam Texas teen battle of the bands competition in front of a full-capacity crowd of more than 500 at The Parish in Austin. The six finalist bands from all over Texas battled it out Feb. 28 and represented an array of styles from alternative to mariachi.

The NAMM Foundation announced that it recently hosted multiple events at the NAMM Show that were focused on keeping music education strong in schools. The Foundation hopes to raise awareness within the music products industry about the critical importance of being active in their communities in order to maintain support for music education programs in today’s economic environment.

The filmed conversations lend valuable and historical insight into the music products industry and add to the growing collection of industry-related stories and dialogue documented by NAMM since June 2000.

The groups will compete in this one-of-a-kind contest, which is designed to support the teen musicians’ local music education programs. The six finalists are:

Starting at $69.99 per month, the plans offer limited medical insurance to NAMM Member companies and their employees, some of whom have been unable to obtain comprehensive medical insurance because of high costs or pre-existing conditions.
